keeper of owl loop

the first owl i saw in the wild was in mystic, connecticut, on the first day of ramadan in 1997.  i walked along a path near my house that circles around through dense trees, many of which are in various stages of decay.  i was leaving for africa a few days later and i was thrilled with a glimpse of this powerful bird.

as i turned down a narrow, slightly wending area, i looked up and saw this incredible owl perched on a branch at the very top of the tree.  i was mystified.  it stared at me for a long while and my trusty companion, chaos, calmly waited while the owl and i enjoyed a long, quiet moment.

i didn’t know at the time, of course, but that would be the first of hundreds of owl sightings for me.  i could even hear the owls in the woods at night – who cooks for you, who cooks for you now! that’s what a barred owl’s call sounds like.  sometimes when i walked at dusk, i heard them calling to each other – an owl conversation, really.  i had many, many magical owl sightings and experiences on what came to be known as “owl loop.”

when i began this painting, i silently asked the owl to come be in my painting – not to be caught and trapped there, no, but to just share its spirit with the painting so i could best honor my deep and abiding admiration.  to stand in the woods making eye contact with an owl is a moment of magic.  on one of my walks, my sweet niece brit was with me and just as we hoped, we found a barred owl low in a small tree right next to the path where we walked at haley farm, in noank, connecticut.

bring some owl spirit into your world to learn the awesome power of silent flight, piercing insight and mystical communication.
