isle of n’gor

this painting represents one of the most profound moments of my life.  i was in senegal with my dear friend and we trekked to the beach and took a quick boat ride to the sweet, small isle of n’gor.

i went in the water – the cool water through which i could hear that guy on the beach playing djembe.  as i floated on my back, listening to the drumbeats, i saw way, way up into the deep endless beyond, right through that perfect blue sky.

and as i did, i felt gravity below me holding me to this earth where i am suspended perfectly between these two extremes.

i felt cradled in some dreamy way.  i felt held by the gentle hands of the cosmos.  i floated, effortlessly, divinely strung between up and down, so easy just breathing, floating, feeling some perfect balance in place through no effort of my own.

i felt pierced by some deep harmony – pierced right through my soul.

as i finally turned to get out of the water, i noticed a white object in the sand below about four feet of water.  i reached to get it, but i couldn’t reach it unless i dove under, which i did.  i was so surprised when i brought it to the surface and i looked at it – it was a lovely shell and right in the center was one letter – U.

i read it, because i can’t not read things when i see them.  i heard my own voice in my head say the word “you.”  and i thought, “me?”  and that shell said U.

i got out of the water in a daze – the good kind where all of life seems to be falling together effortlessly.  i went over to some big black boulders on the edge of the beach and i sat down to marvel at the cool experience i just had.

there was even a flag near the rocks, though i’m not sure whose flag was flying.

while i sat there, a young girl came running over with something in her hand.  she reached to give me what she had and i took it.  i looked at it only to find it was the exact same kind of shell i had just found under the water, except this one was slightly smaller and fit perfectly inside the shell i had found.

that blew me away.  i had the crazy deep feeling we are all nestled inside each other somehow.  i felt some huge cosmic perfection that we are cradled inside.

it brings tears to my eyes to think of it.  what made that little girl run over and hand me that shell?  she’s suspended with me here, between the deep down and the high endless sky.

it left me with the feeling we’re all more closely linked than we think.
